French 1 AB

This course is an introduction to the French language and culture. The student develops the skills of correct pronunciation through aural-oral drill with a selected active vocabulary and practices grammar in elementary composition and conversation. The student will present short oral and written reports in correct forms and write French from dictation. Students should expect homework daily.

French 2 AB

This course is designed to supplement and reinforce the first level. The student begins a more intensive study of the grammar, culture, and vocabulary in context. The student will be able to respond in writing to questions written in French and communicate with speakers of the foreign language.

French 3 AB

The major emphasis of the course is to provide the student with greater opportunities to fine-tune the communication skills acquired during the previous years. The course focuses on reading, writing and speaking contemporary French. Texts from throughout the French speaking world are used and various aspects of French culture are discussed.

French 4 AB

The major emphasis of this course is to provide activities to develop proficiency in all communication skills but especially to develop the ability to read and speak on subjects fluently in French. The writing skills are practiced through brief analysis of literary works.

French Advanced Placement Literature /Language AB

AP French is designed for students who have very good mastery of the French language. More refined points of grammar are stressed. This is a college level class and the major emphasis is on providing the lexical, grammatical, and reading content of Advanced Placement Language / Literature to prepare the student to take the Advanced Placement examination for college credit.

Spanish 1 AB

This course is an introduction to the Spanish language and culture. The student develops the skills of correct pronunciation through aural-oral drill with a selected active vocabulary, accurate comprehension of the printed word, usage of the vocabulary, and grammar in elementary composition and conversation. The student will present short oral and written reports in correct form and white Spanish form dictation.

AP Spanish Literature is a college level class designed for students who are able to read Spanish. The major emphasis of the course is to provide the reading content to prepare the student to take the Advanced Placement examination for college credit.

Spanish for Spanish Speakers 1 AB

An accelerated and enriched two-semester course for students with native or near-native speaking fluency in Spanish. Uses vocabulary and grammatical content of regular Spanish 1A, 1B, and 2A with additional reading. Stresses reading, writing, and correct usage. Grammatical concepts at this level are functionally taught by example and reinforcement, using drills and guided writing exercises. Students who complete this course receive ten semester periods of credit.

Prerequisites: 
A native or near-native speaking knowledge of Spanish acquired at home, from parents, relatives, etc., without possessing formal academic skills of reading and writing.

After reading a literary selection in Spanish, students will give an oral or a brief written summary in acceptable Spanish. One presentation per semester is required.

Spanish for Spanish Speakers 2 AB

Provides vocabulary and grammar content of Spanish 2B and 3AB with additional reading. Continues to stress reading, writing, and correct usage through discussion, reading, and composition activities. Students who complete this course receive ten semester periods of credit.

Prerequisites: 
Spanish for Spanish Speakers 1AB. Ability to understand, speak and write Spanish and evidence of having acquired the basic academic writing skills of Level One.

30 minutes daily
Other aspects/requirements: 
After reading a literary selection in Spanish, students will give an oral and a written summary of 1–2 pages using correct spelling and sentence structure. Two presentations per semester are required. Meets requirements for high school, state colleges and universities.
